Symmetry – How exciting is it ?

People like us who live and breathe in design always have a thought going behind their mind while creating something – “Symmetry”.

After all anything that is symmetrical looks good. Why dont we call someone beautiful with a visibly squint eye? Simply because that is not symmetrical. Most of the things you find in the nature is symmetrical, people, animals, leaves, butterfly, trees (when sectioned) everything.

Definitions

literary – the correspondence in size, form, and arrangement of parts on opposite sides of a plane, line, or point; regularity of form or arrangement in terms of like, reciprocal, or corresponding parts.

literary – beauty based on or characterized by such excellence of proportion.

mathematical – a geometrical or other regularity that is possessed by a mathematical object and is characterized by the operations that leave the object invariant: A circle has rotational symmetry and reflection symmetry.

physics – a property of a physical system that is unaffected by certain mathematical transformations as, for example, the work done by gravity on an object, which is not affected by any change in the position from which the potential energy of the object is measured.

Ever wondered what a perfect example of something not symmetrical would be? Not that I can think of something straightaway. But how did symmetry get such a hype? There must have been something with which it was compared – something Asymmetrical. Come to think of it, perhaps our universe is an asymmetry. Is there another mirror image of our universe on the other side? If not it’s definitely asymmetrical. If yes, then there is another world on that side and if you think deeper, there are all the same elements that we have in this world. There is a me, a you in that other world, because it has to be there to make things symmetrical. Boring?

But I am getting distracted here.

I was talking about the effect of symmetry on design, and if asymmetry will help bring life to it? Symmetry is appealing, but is it exciting? It’s like two parallely straight lines, never desitined to meet. Question is – If life is a pallette and the time that we live is the canvas, what colors would you like to sqeeze to paint? How would you paint it?

I dont know yet – But I think it’s high time to give asymmetry a chance and see if things spice up a bit. I am again ready to design.

Cheers ~
